Written Project: Describing a city from your country.
Objective: To create a descriptive text for cities in the country that can be used in class.
Pick a city from your country. It should have a population of at least 1 million people. Then, collect information using the internet, articles and any reference material to describe the city. Every paragraph should contain 45 words or more. Use the following guidelines to do it:

1. Introduction: Present the city indicating its location, main characteristics such as weather and geography, foundational history, national importance and cultural influence.
2. Urban Area: Describe the urban area of the city, indicate important landmarks, how people transport in the city, determine industrial production and highways connecting other cities.
3. People: What kind of people live here? What are the most common types of jobs? What do people do when they go out? What festivals or traditions are important?
4. Conclusion: What is the future of the city? What problems need to be solved? Do you like this city? Why?

Students should make a draft, then, with the teacher proceed to edit until the text is well corrected and handled. After that, SS will have to create a series of question by which other can measure their reading comprehension about the text. When this is done, it is published online so others can practice with the material.

Writing Task: Describing a Journey.
Objective: To tell a personal story using the past forms
Now it is your turn to describe that journey in terms of what you or your characters see, hear, smell or feel. Write no more than 200 words, but make sure this is a well laid out, well structured piece of writing with full sentences. Think clearly about your starting point and your destination. Then you can start to imagine all the bits in between. If it helps, draw a map (like last time) before you start writing. With each new piece of description, start a new paragraph so that we can understand the journey step by step. Remember to use commas and full stops effectively.

  • What time of day is the travelling taking place? What’s the weather like?
  • What is the mode of transport? Are we walking, driving, riding a horse etc?
  • What’s the landscape like? Are there trees? Flowers? Or fields? Rivers or a desert? Waterfalls, even? Try to describe all of these elements simply and clearly so that a reader can really imagine what they look like.
  • Are there wild animals to be seen? Buildings along the way? Factories? Farms? Castles? Bridges?
  • Are there obstacles or dangerous places that need to be passed? Are there strangers to meet? How does the journey end? What has the experience taught you?
