Present Simple vs Continuous

Present Simple is used to talk about habits, regular activities, present states, scientific facts, feelings and opinions.

Habit
I always read something before sleeping.
My friends celebrate their team wins with a big tasty dinner.
My father always wears a hat during sunny days.

Regular Activities
I go to school every morning.
We have English classes on Friday.
The students take a final test at the end of the semester.

Present States
The statue at the park is very dirty.
My brother is fit at this moment.
My family lives in Venezuela at the moment.

Scientific Facts
The planets rotate around the Sun.
All objects on earth are atractted to the ground.
Yellow and green makes orange.

Feelings
Margaret feels so depressed right now.
I am excited about this new movie based on my favorite book.
Sandy and Phil get bored during Math classes.

Opinions
I like eating pizza, hamburgers and fast food in general.
We hate watching bad horror movies.
My mother doesn't fancy doing sports.

Present Continuous or Progressive is used to talk about ongoing actions, events happening around now, temporal situations, plans and predictions.

Ongoing actions
I am teaching an English class.
Students are reading different examples.
People are walking on the street.

Events happening around now
People are protesting against discrimination around the world.
Fashion fans are wearing light colored clothes for this trend.
I am working on a project due next month.

Temporal situations
I am working in a coffee store to pay for my tutoring. 
They are traveling around Europe.
Danny is attending special classes to make up for his grades.

Plans
Juve and I are visiting our hometown on holidays.
Brenda is backpacking around South America next Summer.
They are going to the movies after the class.

Predictions
Most students are getting good grades in this course.
Robots are taking over earth in the year 2054.
Technology is getting cheaper in the coming years.
